That’s Right Up My Alley

There's a dip in the alley just behind my house.

At one point there were two large potholes in the dip.

Neighbors complained to the city. The city never responded.

Two neighbors filled the potholes with dirt.

First big rain we had and the dirt magically washed away.

Next there were pieces of chipped concrete shoveled in by another neighbor a few houses down. When large cars and trucks sped by, the chipped concrete went with.

Another neighbor eventually added crushed stone which launched into the air with wreckless abandon whenever a big truck sped by.

And finally one day the city came and raked out all the stone, tossing it to the side and into our yard, and filled the potholes with asphalt and a few errant stone fragments.

The alley still floods. The big dip right behind our house, with the two large potholes filled with many a vain attempt to rectify a mutually shared annoyance catches the setting sun, setting fire to the sky and street.

Our little dip, our "seasonal waterfront view," our firey sunset... and the two poorly patched potholes that we all pitched in to try and fix with varying degrees of efficacy...

That's right up my alley.
