Why Fish Reason # Three

Fish are cute.

This used to bother me when people would refer to my fish paintings as "cute". I guess I thought that sentiment trivialized and lessened their value, because to me, fish are so much more than cute. They are resilient and hopeful and healing and magical. 

But I now realize that cute is not a bad thing. If cute draws you in...great! If you stop at cut, that's great too, and if you find a deeper meaning and connection, that is magic!

My art explores the challenges we feel when we are going through difficult times... as well as the hopefulness and inner strength we possess to keep us going. My art has been a vehicle to help me navigate through the challenges of living with Lyme disease.

I use fish imagery, usually contained in bowls and bags to represent the loneliness and limitations sometimes felt when dealing with a chronic situation, using oil and cold wax to explore texture and layers creating a sense of time and memory. 

My painting ritual is a reminder to... just keep swimming...even when life feels hard and uncertain, it is possible to move through any situation with strength and grace and fluidity.
