Peacock Dance

I started dancing Bharathanatyam, the traditional classical dance of Tamil Nadu very young. I remember thinking I must move like a nymph or a goddess now that I was learning how to dance like all the sculptures I would see in ancient carvings. When I moved to the Netherlands, I continued learning to dance until tragedy struck: I tore my ACL and meniscus. Even though I tried well into my late 20s to complete my training in Bharathanatyam, it seemed impossible. My knee would swell when my dancing became too intense, and I had to relinquish the idea that I could finish my dance training. Initially, it was difficult to let go of my childhood dream that I had not only cherished for so long but continuously strived for. Reality set in slowly, and while I don't dance Bharathanatyam anymore, I always pay homage to it.
