I grew up in a humble house in the city. It had butter yellow square ceramic tiles along the length of the kitchen wall with a black ceramic subway tile border.
The sink was cast iron with metal scape marks from the pots and pans that we washed by hand.
It wasn't until I was in my 20s that I had a dishwasher for the first time. So, it makes sense that when the dishwashing detergent ran out, that I didn't know better.
Subbing dish soap is not the right move unless you want a kitchen overflowing with foamy bubbles.
